Seeking God in Prayer
Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ
Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 72
At St. Emma we live as Benedictine nuns
following the Rule of St. Benedict (480-543).
Six times a day we come together to praise God in the
Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Church, which we sing in
English according to simplified Gregorian chant melodies. The center and summit
of the monasery's life of prayer and work is the celebration of the daily
Eucharist. In it we are nourished in our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ
whom we wish to cherish above all (RB 5, 2).
Sacred reading (lectio divina) and personal prayer in an
atmosphere of silence, allowing God to speak to us, are essential for our
monastic life.
